Rita Anderson was born on July 25, 1946, in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. She grew up with her parents Leroy Anderson and Cynthia “Beda” Jarrett. Rita met Bob Marley when he was a member of the Wailers vocal trio along with Bunny Livingston and Peter Tosh. Later, she married him in the 1960s.
