Josef Manuel, known as “Ze Cobra,” is an American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) instructor, competitor, and 4th-degree black belt. He is the founder of Chokelab Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Harrison, New Jersey.
Career
Josef Manuel began training in martial arts through boxing before transitioning to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2001 under Mario Lemos. He later trained under Robson “Robinho” Moura and became one of the early American black belts promoted under Moura’s lineage. He was awarded his black belt in 2009 and continues to compete and coach at a high level.
As a competitor, Manuel has participated in major IBJJF events including the World Championships, Pan American Championships, and European Open, along with regional grappling tournaments such as NAGA and Grapplers Quest.
He is the head instructor of Chokelab BJJ Academy, which trains both recreational students and competitive athletes and has achieved team success in regional and international competitions. In addition to sport coaching, Manuel has provided Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction for military and law enforcement personnel, including U.S. Army Combatives certification training.
Josef Manuel resides in New Jersey with his family, where his children also compete in martial arts events.
